2017 10 05 - day 19 - Saint Julien du Sault to Le Mans.
It was a beautiful clear sunny day for our first big day on the road!
We packed up and headed off. Karen Mk 2 took us on a bit of an adventure in St Julien du Sault as we tried to find our way out of the village to the main highway. There were roads blocked due to road works which always causes dramas. But, we got there!
First stop sign we came to, kitchen drawers flew open as we had forgotten to lock them. Wayne had to quickly go through the cabin to secure them while we held up the traffic.
We had a 300 kilometre drive and most of the way the speed limit was 130 kph! We were heading to Le Mans of car racing fame. (The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the world's oldest active sports car race in endurance racing, held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans. The event represents one leg of the Triple Crown of Motorsport, the other events being the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix).
We got 5 kilometres from Le Mans and we did our old trick! Karen Mk 2 told us to take the third exit, we miscounted and took the second! 30 minutes later (again due to road works and unplanned detours) we were back on track and heading to Camping le Pont Romain in Le Mans.
Very nice spot, six kilometres from city centre. There is a bus from the village nearby every 20 minutes to the centre of Le Mans. We were only going to stay one night but the city looked so interesting and we arrived well after lunchtime, we will stay two.
It was a cold and foggy day, even at 1.30 pm in the afternoon. A quick walk around the huge campsite to get our bearings. There was a swimming pool (usually heated but as we were in the low season, the heating was turned off), games room complete with an old fashioned pinball machine, glamping tents and other types of accommodation. The site was next to a creek so there was the soothing sound of water running over pebbles.
It was now about 4.00 pm so too late to do much other than have a shower, secure and heat the motor home and partake in the evening ritual!
