In the morning, I pop down to the small village market to get some fresh mangos for breakfast then we head off to the small Mayan ruins at Oxkintok. We buy our tickets and are the only tourists there. We decline the services of a guide and feel a bit guilty as he seems a bit down cast at his lack of business. Anyway, we pass a pleasant hour or so exploring the 1000 year old monuments among the trees.
With some difficulty, we eventually manage to get to the country road on the opposite side of the motorway and on to Yaxcopoil. Here we visit a Hacienda now transformed into a museum. This gives a really interesting insight into Hacienda life for both rich and poor. The boom time came to an end when synthetic fibres became a more cost effective alternative to sisal.
Our destination today is Santa Elena which we hope to use as a base and where we hope to find a bed for a few nights. The oddly named Pickled Onion has no rooms but across the road at the Flycatcher Inn we get a very large beautiful suite surrounded by beautiful shady gardens with fountains. A really lovely place to retreat to in the heat of the mid day sun 34 °C.
