The Sons of Gwalia was the sixth most productive mine in Australian gold mining history when it closed down in 1963. The mine reopened again in 1984 and it remains in production
Of historical significance is the Managment of the mine by Herbert Hoover from the US who brought in improved efficiency practices, including the hiring of Italians who were more productive than the Angl-Saxon miners Obviously he was not popular. He was sent to China in the middle of the Boxer rebellion, then the Us and back to OZ where he became manager of the Boulder mine. Herbert Hoover went on to become the 31st President of the US
His first home which he designed but never lived in, is perched right beside the Sons of Gwalia Mine
The miners houses pictured in the Album are tiny, mostly made of tin with 2 chimneys, one for the stove and one for warming the house
