Hello from Byron!
This is the backpackers mekka of the Australian east coast. I think it's the number one visited place or something, certainly seems like that anyway - just about every single person in the town is a backpacker - most of them British!
It's easy to see why it's so popular though, the white sand beach is long & beatiful and the atmosphere is totally chilled, with streets lined with outdoor cafes and restaurants. Most peoples days are filled with very little except sitting around eating, drinking, smoking, or if there is any activity it is usually no more energetic than practicing didgerydoo skills or something equally "arty farty"!
This laid back, alternative lifestyle is largely due to the abundance of marijuini in the area. Byron is close to the hippie commune of Nimbin, which can only be compared to Amsterdam in its attitude towards life & drugs. A few of us took a trip there yesterday & it really is a weird experience to see the people of this self sufficient community, completely doped out of their heads the whole time, freely trading in shops & on the streets, a constant smell of weed in the air the whole time, and no hassle from the police whatsoever. Cooool man!
The hostel is the biggest I've stayed in so far. It's called the Arts Factory & is a bit of a hippie commune in itself! Monday night was talent show night & was excellent - there are loads of talented people here, a lot of them long stayers who have settled into the Byron Bay way of life.
I've also found tonnes of people who I met in Coffs Harbour, Caroline, Jo, Ollie & loads more are here at the moment & I can hardly walk around town without bumping into yet another ex-Aussitel person!
After a couple of nights out I think tonight I'll opt for a midnight movie @ the hostel's cinema which has sofas & cushions on the floor instead of chairs. Mmmm.
