One hell of a ride!
I had an hour or so to spare in the Gustav Eiffel designed La Paz bus station before boarding the swanky Nuevo Continente, double-decker, full cama bus for Cusco. On my return trip from La Paz to Cusco, instead of Mexican nuns I was mostly accompanied by French and Spanish backpackers so thankfully, there was a lot less ukelele this time.
It took an hour or so to escape the sprawl of El Alto and get out onto the short stretch of Bolivia before the border. The border crossing was once again, seemless, thanks to the brand new integrated control building. We then skirted the southern shores of Lake Titicaca - the highest lake in the world - which was a beautiful, deep azul colour.
After dropping off some travellers in Puno, it was a long slog north to Cusco, listening to Long Way Down by Kaleo, reading a biography of German explorer Alexander Von Humboldt whilst admiring the incredible views as the sun began to set on the snow capped mountains. One of the best journeys I've ever taken.
It did seem to go on forever, not helped by the fact it got dark about 6 and we rolled into Cusco around 10 meaning we had around 4 hours of darkness...
Tired, and delirious, I've finally had half a decent meal (a big mac, the only place open that isn't a club) and am probably going to sleep in these same clothes as I have to get up at 6 anyway to get to the airport.
Note to self: this mountain scenery is seriously making me consider the Oasis Overland tour to Kyrgyzstan next year... for just £700...
Anyways...
Vamos!
