Returned to Granada by a shuttle bus which was quick and comfortable and it dropped us off right outside our Hotel Guardabarranco where we had our next 4 nights booked...Nice to be back to familiar streets and sites. Our old friend Fernando the porter seemed very pleased to see us.
We enjoy a few days of doing not much. On one day we took a taxi out to the very impressive cemetery with its mausoleums and statues lining the narrow streets and alleys between the graves. All gleaming white and quite dazzling. An old chap appeared from nowhere and opened some gates to give us a closer look at a group of family graves all with black iron railings. We found out later that it was one of the most famous families in Nicaragua.
On another day we took a trip up to the rim of the crater of Masaya volcano. It was evening and deep down inside, we could see lava pools swirling and lots of smoke in the ghostly glow, rising from the core. The ancient Mayans are said to have offered human sacrifices here and more recently, in t 1970s, the Samosa dictatorship are alleged to have disposed of political prisoners by hurling them in to the burning hell below.
