Day 82. Mexico.
The first stop today was the Zocalo, the largest city square in the world, and very busy today. In the centre there was an international book fair in full swing, while off to one side the International Archery Championship was in progress. Finally, on the other side preparations were being made for the Alejibre Parade, an annual event to honour Mexican handcrafts and folk art, involving the creation of papier-mâché figures which are then paraded around the city accompanied by matching bands and dancers. After watching the parade and enjoying the carnival atmosphere we headed off by underground and then train to the Xochimilco area. This is a lake that has been gradually filled in by the locals until it now resembles a series of canals between the islands. Each of the many islands holds a tourist shop and in some cases fields. We took a trip on one of the punts between the islands and joined the fleet of hundreds of other little boats. It was interesting to see the area although we were victims of the Mexican tendency to want to be paid twice for everything and to demand extra cash for everything once they got you on the water! Nevertheless it was an experience to learn from!
