Tetons national park part 2
‘Grizzlys’!
After a quick breakfast, we drove back towards the Tetons national park, returning over the mountain pass where we had the experience with the hail the day before.
This time there were no issues, aside from a little low cloud.
Our intention for the day was to visit the cable car at Jackson Hole, which was at Teton village, and if we could then take a boat tour on Jackson lake.
We drove into the park and followed the road along to our first stop. As we were travelling we saw a lot of cars parked by the roadside and a park ranger in attendance.
We slowed down and asked some of the people what they were looking at, and they confirmed it was a Mum grizzly and two cubs, off in the mid distance. We parked up and joined the others, and sure enough after a short while the Mum stood up and walked along a way, and was soon followed by two bounding cubs. This happened several more times until they were out of sight. Amazing.
After that we drove on to toward Jackson hole. On the way we saw more pronghorn deer and elk and several ospreys sitting on fence posts.
Upon reaching the Teton village where the Jackson hole resort was the weather became rainy and windy.
We were told in the information centre that the cable cars were being closed because of the weather, so that was out.
We decided to press on toward Jackson lake to see if we could do the boat tour.
The weather looked ok, so we bought our tickets but had a little time to wait.
We decided to get some food in the park restaurant until our boat tour.
However, again the weather closed in, and when we enquired if the trip was still on, but it had been cancelled.
So we were a little disappointed, but we had our last call of the day to make. Back over near the campsite in Victor ID, at a town called Driggs, we had a tour of a vodka distillery booked.
So we drove back the way we had come in the morning. On the way we passed by a drive in movie theatre, called ‘the Spud’, they are pretty rare these days.It was showing the incredibles 2.
Eventually we arrived at the Grand Teton vodka and bourbon distillery at about a hour before our tour.
We looked on the door, and they were only doing 2 tours that day due to bottling, so we had an hour to kill.
We decided to go back to Driggs town proper and get some food for later, as we were grilling some steaks on Jeff’s mini Weber grill.
So we picked up salad stuffs and other bits and pieces.
We were then ready for our tour, so back we went.
There were a few other folks from Kentucky on the tour with us, which was conducted by one of the brothers who owned the distillery.
We started by tasting some of the product and then moved through the distillery proper, learning how their potato vodka was made. (Essentially using dried potato flakes and the same yeast used in sparkling wine and champagne)
After the tour, we bought some products, but as part of the tour we got 2 copper mugs and a jar of drunken cherries. (The fruit used to flavour the vodka).
We returned to the campsite and grilled our steaks and asparagus and had a nice meal.
Early to bed, as we had a long drive the next day, a 5/6 hour drive across the plains of Idaho to Boise.
