Today was another disappointment for our second helihike booked.
Cancelled due due to high winds and a storm coming in for the next few days.
We try to raise our spirits and say it was meant to be.
So in beautiful sunny weather we head to the White Horse Campground which is the the nearest Point to park for the 5km Hooker Valley Walk. The Walk had been recommended to me and I really wanted to do some walking which we had not had a chance to do as of yet.
On arrival the rain started, the mist in the Hooker Valley swarmed down, the peaks no longer visible. Waterproof jackets on we head onto the walk with the wind and rain battering us.
Tom walked ahead of us and we tried to encourage Bec, though I did wonder myself why we continued. The walk was quite busy so it encouraged us to get to the Hooker Lake. It was difficult to take photos of the icy mountains which were edged with that wonderful Glacier blue colour.
We walk at at our own pace and eventually meet Tom on his way back. We continue on battling the rain and wind and well, what a Wow! I did not realise it was a terminal lake for a glacier and on the lake were large scattered icebergs. Even in the furocious wind and rain we were mesmerised by the sight.
Its hard to fathom that in a 15 min drive from 26 degrees of heat we then are walking in cold, mist, rain and wind for probably an hour to surroundings of icy mountains, a terminal face of a Glacier and icebergs in a lake. WoW
Becky sat and took it all in, took photos and then started the walk back. We were cold, wet through but it was well worth it.
russ and I walked down to the lake front to get closer. We had to,drag ourselves away and return same way again battling the rain and wind. Tom and Becky already back changed into dry clothes.
We retuen to the cabin and have lunch to 29 degrees and sun! Tom goes to,the lake for a swim, Becky stays in the cabin to chill and Russ and I return up,the road to,the Tasman Glacier viewing walk. You can see as we approach the Hooker Valley is shrouded with lowe cloud and list where as the Valley next door , the Tasman is in sun and high cloud. We park in sun and walk in sun! Such a change to the next Valley. This walk is short, stepped and well, even more of a wow from this morning!
The glacier is massive, the lake is a stunning colour where the Glacier flour has settled leaving a wonderful azure colour. It also has large icebergs. It was just incredible. 2 speed boats that give cruises to,touch the icebergs came out at one point and then can you see the scale of the lake and the bergs and terminal face. Incredible.
we return just full,of it and we tell the kids they must come and see in the morning before we head back to Pegasus.
Russ kindly drives us into Twizel for our evening meal which Becky booked us into the Poppies Cafe TripAdvisors number one restaurant. A lovely place, love the interior and imagine in the winter how cosy it would be.
We had a scrumptious meal and squeezed down a desser over white wine,
on return to the cabin we play a game and hit the pillows.
What a day.
